Verdi: Small Town, Big Lots

Verdi is a census-designated place on Nevada's western border with California, near Interstate 80, and it is the far west end of the area we serve as concrete contractors. The community had 1,396 residents in 2020 on about 3.4 square miles, at an elevation of 4,899 feet. The 2010 census found a median age of 52.2, and homes here tend to sit on larger, quieter lots than in the middle of the metro.

A town with a story

The area was first called O'Neil's Crossing, after a man who built a bridge there in 1860. In 1868 Charles Crocker of the Central Pacific Railroad drew the name of composer Giuseppe Verdi from a hat. On November 4, 1870, five men blocked the track near Verdi and stopped a train bound for Virginia City loaded with gold and silver, and escaped with most of it. Today Verdi has Nevada Historical Marker No. 191 and casinos at Interstate 80 Exits 2 and 4.

Projects that fit Verdi properties

With fewer than 700 housing units counted in 2010 and an average of about 2.2 people per household, Verdi is mostly quiet residential property. The work people ask for leans toward improving the outdoor space:

Large stamped patios. Fieldstone or slate patterns in earthy colors that suit a setting in the shadow of the Verdi Range.

Long driveways. Rural driveways can run a long way from the road. We pour them in sections with planned joints and make sure the base is compacted along the whole length.

Walkways and garden paths. Curved paths poured with flexible forms, finished in broom, exposed aggregate or a light stamp.

Slabs for outbuildings. Garages, barns and workshops need level slabs with thickened edges.

Ground that has moved

From February to June 2008, an earthquake swarm in the Verdi and Mogul area produced more than 5,000 quakes, ranging from magnitude 0.7 to 4.7 according to the Verdi article. Concrete poured before then may carry hairline cracks from that period. Most are stable and only need sealing to keep water out. If a crack has opened wide or one side has dropped, we check the base and replace the panel.

For new pours, the most useful protection against any ground movement is the same as for frost: a well-compacted base, reinforcement where it is needed and joints that let the slab crack in straight, planned lines.

Weather at the state line

Wikipedia does not publish a climate table for Verdi, but it sits about 500 feet higher than Sparks, right against the mountains, so we plan for at least the cold Sparks sees. All outdoor work gets air-entrained concrete and a surface pitched to shed meltwater. On a north-facing driveway that stays shaded through winter, a broom texture and a penetrating sealer matter even more.

Shaded driveways and snow

On a mountain-edge lot, one part of a driveway may get full sun while another stays in shadow all winter. The shaded part holds snow and ice for weeks and goes through far more freeze-thaw cycles. When we lay out a new driveway, we look at where the shade falls in winter and make sure that section has a solid slope toward a drain point or the edge, so meltwater does not sheet across it and refreeze. We also suggest a sealer on those sections and remind owners that sand gives grip on new concrete without the damage salt can cause.

For walks that run along the north side of a house, we sometimes recommend a slightly wider path. It gives room to pile shoveled snow off the walking surface instead of on top of it.

Washoe County rules

Verdi is unincorporated Washoe County, and we check county requirements before scheduling. On long rural driveways we also confirm where a ready-mix truck can turn and unload. Call (775) 278-6129 to set up a visit in Verdi, NV.

Verdi Questions

Can you pour a long rural driveway in Verdi?

Yes. Long driveways are poured in planned sections with regular joints and a compacted base the whole way. We also work out how a ready-mix truck can reach each section.

Should I worry about cracks from the 2008 earthquakes?

Most hairline cracks are stable and only need sealing. A crack that is wide, growing or has an offset needs a closer look at the base, and that panel may need replacing.

What patio style suits a Verdi home?

Many owners choose stamped fieldstone or slate in earthy colors to match the mountain setting. We bring samples so you can see options against your house.
