Concrete Where the Ground Has Shaken
Mogul is a census-designated place along Interstate 80 about six miles west of downtown Reno, and for concrete contractors it comes with a specific history. In February 2008 an earthquake swarm began here and stayed very active until June. It produced more than 5,000 earthquakes, topped by a magnitude 5.0 mainshock on April 26, 2008, according to the Mogul article. The Reno article notes that the swarm damaged many homes in the area.
Reading cracks the right way
If you own a home in Mogul that predates 2008, its driveway and walks may still show cracks from that spring. Not every crack is a problem. Here is how we sort them out:
- Hairline cracks, level on both sides: usually stable. We clean and seal them so water cannot get into the base and freeze.
- Cracks wider than about a quarter inch: we check whether they are still opening. A stable wide crack can be routed and filled.
- Cracks with an offset, where one side is higher: the base has moved. This panel usually needs replacing.
- Panels broken into several pieces: replacement is almost always the right call.
We would rather seal a stable crack than sell you a new driveway you do not need.
Small place, close to everything
The 2020 census counted 1,258 residents on about 1.46 square miles at an elevation of 4,701 feet, roughly 860 people per square mile. Before 2010 the Census Bureau counted it as part of the Verdi-Mogul CDP. It lies just off Interstate 80, which makes it a straightforward trip from Sparks.
New concrete built to handle movement
No slab is earthquake proof, but good practice limits damage from any movement, whether it is a quake, frost heave or settling soil:
Base first. We remove soft material and compact gravel in layers. A uniform base means the slab moves as a unit rather than snapping at a weak spot.
Joints in the right places. Control joints at proper spacing and at corners, where cracks like to start, keep cracking in straight, tidy lines.
Isolation where slabs meet structures. We place isolation joint material between new concrete and the house, the garage slab and any posts, so one can move without cracking the other.
Reinforcement where it helps. Rebar or fiber, chosen for the job, holds cracks tight if they form.
Everything else we pour
Mogul homeowners also call us for the usual list: new and widened driveways, broom-finished and stamped patios, front walks and side paths, pads for sheds and hot tubs, and step rebuilds. At just over 4,700 feet the winters bring regular frost, so all exterior work gets air-entrained concrete and proper curing. Before the pour, we also look at where your downspouts and sprinklers drop water, since a soaked base settles faster than a dry one.
Small repairs that prevent big ones
Water is the enemy of a cracked slab. Once it gets through a crack into the base, it freezes, expands and pushes the slab up, then leaves a void when it melts. Each winter the crack gets a little wider. Sealing cracks with a flexible, UV-stable sealant every few years is an inexpensive safeguard, and we can do it as a standalone service. We also fill the gap where the driveway meets the garage slab, which is a common entry point for water on homes of any age.

Mogul Questions
Do I need to replace a Mogul driveway that cracked in 2008?
Not necessarily. If the cracks are narrow and level, sealing them is often enough. If panels have offset or broken into pieces, we replace those panels and leave sound ones in place.
What is an isolation joint?
It is a strip of flexible material placed where new concrete meets the house, a garage slab or a post. It lets each piece move on its own so movement in one does not crack the other.
