Dayton's Growth, One Slab at a Time

Dayton sits at a bend in the Carson River in Lyon County, east of Carson City, and few places in the region have added homes faster, which keeps concrete contractors busy. Its population went from 5,907 in 2000 to 8,964 in 2010 and then 15,153 in 2020, a 69% jump in a single decade. Housing units rose from 2,322 in 2000 to 6,114 in 2020. Wikipedia describes the growth since the 1990s as phenomenal, with most new homes on the east side of the river.

Old town, new subdivisions

Dayton is one of the oldest settlements in Nevada. In 1849 Abner Blackburn found gold in Gold Creek, and by 1850 placer miners were working the mouth of Gold Canyon. The settlement, first called Gold CaƱon, took the name Dayton from surveyor John Day in 1861. Great Fires in 1866 and 1870 destroyed much of it, and the population hovered around 500 until after World War I.

Today the town has two faces. The historic core near the river has older buildings with older concrete. The newer subdivisions across the river have young homes whose owners often want to add patios, parking and shop space. We work on both, but the jobs are very different.

Projects for newer Dayton homes

Concrete patios. Many builder patios are small. We pour larger slabs or extend existing ones, with control joints placed so the new and old sections move separately.

Stamped concrete. Ashlar slate, random stone and wood plank patterns give a backyard a finished look without the loose pavers that can shift over time.

Driveway extensions and RV pads. Lots here often have room for a side pad. We pour these thicker than walks, over compacted base, so the pad carries a loaded trailer.

Shop and garage slabs. A detached shop needs a level floor with thickened edges for the walls and a smooth finish inside. We pour the slab to the size and thickness your building plans call for.

Desert ground and river ground

Dayton sits at 4,397 feet at the western end of the Twenty-Six Mile Desert. Desert ground tends to be loose and sandy near the surface, while ground close to a river can be softer and damper. Either way, the base keeps a slab from cracking. Loose or organic material is stripped, then crushed rock is placed and compacted in lifts before forms go up. Sandy ground gets dampened ahead of the pour so it does not pull water out of the concrete.

Winter nights freeze here as they do across northern Nevada, so outdoor concrete is air entrained, and joints are cut the same day or the next morning depending on how fast the slab sets.

Repairs on older concrete

In the older part of town, typical problems include walks lifted by tree roots, steps that have separated from porches and slabs that were poured without joints and have cracked across. We can grind small trip edges, seal stable cracks or cut out and replace sections. For broken steps we usually recommend full replacement so risers can be made even.

Lyon County rules

Dayton is unincorporated Lyon County, so county requirements apply rather than a city's. We check what applies to your type of work before scheduling, and if your subdivision has an HOA, bring its guidelines to the estimate. Call (775) 278-6129 to set up a free visit in Dayton, NV.
