Concrete on Higher Ground
Golden Valley is a small census-designated place about seven miles north of downtown Reno, and as concrete contractors we treat it as hillside country. At 5,135 feet it sits higher than Lemmon Valley next door and more than 700 feet above Sparks. The 2020 census counted 1,580 residents on 3.61 square miles of land, a density of 437 people per square mile, so most homes have some room around them, and on the lots that slope, grade drives the design.
Slopes change the plan
On flat ground a driveway is mostly about thickness and base. On a slope, every slab has to work with gravity. A driveway that climbs from the street needs a texture that grips when it is icy, and its transition at the garage has to be shaped so cars do not scrape and water does not run into the garage. A patio on a hillside needs a level surface, which may mean building up one side with compacted fill or cutting into the grade and holding it with a curb.
We plan each of those details before forms go up. We shoot grades, mark where water will go and set the forms to a planned slope. Where a walk has to climb, we use steps with equal risers rather than a steep ramp, because a steep concrete ramp turns into a slide in winter.
Steps are a big part of the work here
Many homes on sloped lots have concrete steps at the front door, on the side path and down into the backyard. Steps take a beating from freeze and thaw because they have so many exposed edges. Common problems include:
- Broken nosings where the front edge of a tread has chipped off
- Treads that tilt toward the house and hold water
- Steps that have pulled away from the porch or foundation
- Uneven risers that cause trips
Small chips can be patched. Steps that have tilted, separated or cracked through usually need to be removed and poured again with even risers, a slight forward slope on each tread and air-entrained concrete.

Patios. Level outdoor space on sloping lots, plain or stamped.

Slabs. Level pads for sheds, hot tubs and carports.
Repair. Crack sealing, step rebuilds and panel replacement.
Built for cold mornings
Higher ground means colder nights. Our region already freezes well over a hundred nights a year on the valley floor, and Golden Valley sits higher still. Every exterior pour gets air-entrained concrete and careful curing. We avoid finishing the surface while bleed water is present, since that weakens the top layer. After curing, a penetrating sealer helps the slab shed water through its first winters.
Once part of a bigger CDP
Until 2010, the Census Bureau counted Golden Valley together with Lemmon Valley to the north as one place. They are now listed separately, and we work in both. In Golden Valley the questions are usually about slope and steps; in Lemmon Valley they are more often about low, wet ground.
Unincorporated Washoe County
Golden Valley is a northern suburb of Reno but sits in unincorporated Washoe County, so county requirements apply. We confirm them for your project before a pour date is set. Call (775) 278-6129 to set a time in Golden Valley, NV.

Golden Valley Questions
My Golden Valley driveway is steep. Is concrete still a good choice?
Yes. We use a broom finish across the slope for grip, shape the transition at the garage and street, and plan drainage so water does not sheet across the surface and freeze.
Can you rebuild concrete steps on a hillside lot?
Yes. The old steps come out and new ones are poured with matching risers and treads pitched to shed water, tied into both the walk and the porch.
Can I get a level patio on a sloped Golden Valley yard?
Usually. We either build up the low side with compacted fill or cut into the slope and hold it with a curb, then pour a level slab with a slight drainage slope.
